Monodraught has just launched the WINDCATCHER® X-Air system, which is the result of four years intensive research and development, the system bristles with innovation and a number of patented technologies.
One of WINDCATCHER X-Air’s defining features includes distinctive styling and patented LED architectural lighting. The patented corner design not only increases performance but it also allows excess wind to bypass the system, reducing loading on the unit in high winds.
Another innovation includes ACTIVLOUVRE® modulating aerofoil louvre technology featuring specially designed aerofoil blades that minimises resistance and maximise airflow combined with an internal system which provides significantly smoother internal airflow. Supermarket Dash
Monodraught Research Engineer, Benjamin Jones, presented at Building magazine's second supermarkets conference on Wednesday 14th July 2010. The one-day conference was attended by over 100 delegates.
The topic of Ben’s discussion was “Matching a Supermarket’s need for light and thermal comfort with natural ventilation and daylight” and covered:
Delivering successful natural ventilation and daylight strategies for supermarkets: An outline of Monodraught’s extensive experience to date
Closing the loop: a strategy can only be improved upon and best practice achieved by measuring its performance in practice, which is why Monodraught and Tesco and going to do this at a new naturally ventilated supermarket
Why use natural ventilation and daylight: addressing energy consumption, how avoid air conditioning, increasing sales
Understanding and control: Understanding the fundamentals of a technology and controlling a strategy are fundamental to successful natural ventilation and daylight strategies
Other speakers at the conference included representatives from Sainsbury's, ASDA and M&S.
TESCO PREFERS SUNPIPES!
As well as providing Tesco stores with WINDCATCHER® natural ventilation systems, Monodraught are delighted that we have been awarded the preferred supplier status to provide SUNPIPE® natural daylight systems for Tesco’s environmental store programme for 2010/2011. SUNPIPE systems will be fitted in areas such as staff and customer toilets, baby change facilities, offices, and staff and training rooms.
Hollyann Holdsworth, buyer for the Tesco Environmental Store Format, says SUNPIPES will also help us to achieve our strict carbon reduction targets as electric lights in the relevant areas will turn off when enough natural light is available.”
Here's One We Installed Earlier
Monodraught has recently completed an installation of our SUNPIPE® natural daylight systems at the RHS Harlow Carr learning centre in Harrogate. The centre was opened at the end of June by Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins and a group of local school children.
The centre has been designed as eco-friendly and with use of low energy products such as SUNPIPES, the centre is aiming to achieve the UK’s highest ever BREEAM rating for a bespoke building.
SUNPIPES were installed in the learning centre to maximise the benefit of natural daylight in the Teaching Spaces as well as being installed in the Library and WC areas.

Handball Arena Update
Monodraught have commenced the installation of the roof level work for the SUNPIPE® natural daylight systems, pictured here is a webcam image showing the crane that is lifting the systems into place. The first phase, which is the roof work, commenced on Tuesday 29th June and with co-ordination from the roofing contractor should be completed by the end of July.
ODA Olympic Handball Arena
Client: Olympic Delivery Authority - London2012
Main Contractor: Buckingham Group
Architect: Populous
Roofincg & Cladding Contractor: IRC Carocelle
Monodraught are pleased to announce the selection of their 1500mm diameter SUNPIPE® natural daylight systems for this prestigious development in the heart of the 2012 Olympic Village. Site operations are due to commence shortly on the main arena roof. A single-ply roof construction achieving an acoustic rating no less than 45db has been specifically designed and tested by an independent assessor in accordance with strict planning conditions.
Eighty-eight SUNPIPE systems are to be incorporated within the main field area of the Arena roof, similarly tested to achieve a 45db acoustic rating. Concept architects “Populous” have chose pre-oxide copper rain screen cladding to the main arena elevations. Vertically laid standing seam copper sheets shall cloak Kinspan cold store insulated wall panels to all evaluations, creating fast track watertight envelope enabling internal fit-out works to commence ahead of key programme target dates.
The new 6,000 seat indoor arena will host handball, basketball, fencing and goalball during both the Olympic and Paralympic games, and will be converted into a permanent sports venue after the games have concluded. The stadium is designed to achieve an excellent BREEAM rating.
SUNPIPE's New Model
Monodraught has extended its range of Diamond Dome SUNPIPES with the introduction of a new 1000mm Diamond Dome model.
The new 1000mm SUNPIPE Diamond Dome has been designed to meet the demand for higher lux levels in the UK and mainland Europe, where buildings such as retail outlets, sports centres, etc., are increasingly being designed with ceiling heights of 12 metres or more.
The new 1000mm model is calculated to produce a 70% improvement on performance at a height of 12m for example, when compared to the 750mm.
COOL-PHASE Website
Air-conditioning that uses less power than a 60W light bulb
COOL-PHASE® passive ventilation system is an extremely low energy, fresh air ventilation system for use within the Commercial, Education and Healthcare sectors. It is capable of providing both cooling and heat recovery, but at a fraction of the power of typical AC systems. Using a Phase Change Material COOL-PHASE is able to store and release thermal energy highly effectively.
In cooling mode it uses cold night-time air to charge the PCM. The following day it can use the stored energy to reduce the temperature of air passing through the system. Inversely heat recovery mode will actively re-circulate the buildings warmth through the PCM late in the afternoon. The stored heat can then be used the following day to help offset heating requirements.
COOL-PHASE is a green alternative helping to reduce a building’s carbon footprint, but ultimately future development is to power the system entirely using a photo-voltaic array, providing a fully zero carbon alternative to air conditioning, for intelligent buildings of the future. Retail Brochure
After plenty of planning and research, Monodraught has published a new 32-page brochure specifically devoted to the Retail Sector. The brochure is designed to be an informative look at the current legislation and guidelines regarding the retail sector as well as providing case studies. The brochure outlines the benefits that using natural ventilation and daylight when considering energy consumption and carbon emissions. Particular reference is made to SBEM in conjunction with CSA Consulting Engineers who were commissioned to provide an independent study and carry out dynamic modeling.
The 32-page booklet is designed to give guidance to both the Specifier and Customer alike and to provide a simple straightforward explanation as to how the Retail sector can benefit from our systems. A copy of this brochure is available as a download from our website as well as being available by post.

Schools Brochure
Monodraught has published a 40-page brochure specifically devoted to Schools. The brochure was originally designed as an informative look at the Regulations, particularly BB101, which is the ventilation requirements for Schools, but it was rapidly recognised that there are no less than 14 Rules, Regulations, and Guidance documents, that have been published, all concerning the development of Schools. Monodraught decided, therefore, to put together a comprehensive booklet explaining the function and relationship to one another. A detailed description is therefore given on CABE, BREEAM, BB 93, BB 101, BB 87, BB 95, and other relevant documents.
The 40-page booklet is designed to guide the Specifier through the tangled web of these requirements but has been put together with the valuable assistance of Dr Martin Liddament of VEETECH but also with input from Reading University and other associated bodies.
