Battersea Power Station, the iconic building which was first built in the 1930s, has stood empty since 1983. It is one of the largest brick buildings in Europe, and is one of central London’s largest, most visionary and eagerly anticipated new town centres, in which roughly half the development will comprise shops, restaurants and office space. In addition, there will be a six-acre public park, a town square and a new tube station (scheduled to be within Zone 1).
BriggsAmasco are delivering parts of the roofing solution for this element of the project. They have worked closely with Monodraught who have been specified to provide a completely bespoke natural lighting solution at the development of the Switch House West area. Monodraught will be providing all the design, manufacture and installation of the systems from our headquarters in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
In total, 44 bespoke Sunpipe systems will be installed using the old power station’s turbine vent shafts. The systems are 4.5 metres long and 1.3 metres in diameter. In addition, 8 ceiling level systems will provide a consistent ceiling lighting aesthetic. Each system will include internal premium LED luminaires.
As the original Sunpipe designers since 1974, we are considered the UK pioneers of natural lighting solutions. Our aim is to bring natural daylight to areas that don't have windows. The bespoke Sunpipe solution will help the architects create a brighter and more sustainable indoor environment at Battersea Power Station.
Sunpipes are suited to almost any application and have been installed in buildings ranging from residential to The Copper Box Arena in London. We have been working with retailers for many years to bring natural light into a retail environment. This has been known to increase customer’s browsing times, improve customer satisfaction and make a positive contribution to a building’s sustainability. In addition natural light has been shown to have health benefits for both employees and customers.
